808nm lasers are used in a variety of applications, including therapeutic equipment, medical systems, scientific instruments and industrial technologies. Because 808nm radiation is in the near-infrared region, it is particularly important to understand that the beam may not be visible during normal operation.
The correct laser safety glasses must provide suitable protection at 808nm. The first specification to check is therefore the wavelength range of the filter. Eyewear designed for another wavelength should not automatically be assumed to protect against an 808nm laser.
Optical Density is another critical specification. OD indicates the attenuation provided by the filter at a specified wavelength. The required OD depends on the laser's output, beam characteristics and anticipated exposure conditions.
The filter should also provide adequate protection across the relevant range rather than simply listing 808nm as a single protected wavelength.
Visible Light Transmission is useful when the operator needs to see equipment or a treatment area while wearing the glasses. Depending on the filter, the lens may significantly alter the amount and appearance of visible light.
Frame design is also worth considering. Fit-over eyewear can be useful for prescription users, while wraparound designs may provide additional coverage.
The safest approach is to identify the exact laser specifications before choosing protective eyewear. Wavelength, OD, VLT and frame coverage should all be considered as part of the overall laser safety assessment.
