Laser Safety Glasses for Laser Engraving | Safety Guide

Laser engraving machines are used across manufacturing, signage, woodworking, personalisation and many other industries. Although enclosed engraving systems can significantly reduce exposure risk, open or partially enclosed systems require careful attention to laser safety.

The appropriate laser safety glasses depend on the wavelength produced by the engraving system. Common laser engraving technologies can use different wavelengths, meaning there is no single type of eyewear suitable for every machine.

Optical Density is one of the most important specifications. The filter must provide an appropriate level of attenuation for the wavelength and laser conditions involved.

The power of the laser also needs to be considered. High-powered engraving systems can present substantially greater hazards than low-powered systems, particularly where the beam is accessible.

Reflections should not be overlooked either. Materials being engraved can reflect or scatter laser radiation, depending on their surface and composition.

Protective eyewear should be considered alongside other safety controls. Enclosures, covers, interlocks and controlled access can reduce the likelihood of direct or reflected exposure.

The visibility provided by the eyewear is another consideration. Operators may need to monitor the engraving process and inspect materials while wearing their protective glasses.

When selecting laser safety glasses, always check the exact wavelength, OD rating and intended application. The colour or darkness of the glasses alone cannot determine whether they are appropriate for a particular engraving machine.
