Red diode lasers are used in alignment equipment, medical devices, optical systems and other applications. Their visible beam can make them easier to identify than invisible infrared lasers, but visibility does not mean the beam is automatically safe.
Laser safety glasses should be selected according to the actual wavelength of the red diode laser. Red lasers can operate at different wavelengths, so the description "red laser" is not precise enough to determine suitable eyewear.
Optical Density is an important specification because it indicates how effectively the filter attenuates the laser radiation at a specified wavelength.
The filter should also cover the complete wavelength range relevant to the laser. Where multiple wavelengths are present, each wavelength should be checked against the eyewear specifications.
Visibility can be particularly important for alignment work. Operators may need to observe equipment and reference points while wearing protective eyewear, making VLT an important practical consideration.
The frame should fit securely and remain correctly positioned during use. Depending on the application, side protection or a wraparound design may provide additional coverage.
Reflected laser radiation should also be considered. Polished or reflective surfaces can redirect a beam into unexpected areas of the workspace.
Laser safety glasses should therefore be selected using the laser's technical specifications rather than its visible colour alone. Wavelength, OD, VLT and frame design should all form part of the selection process.
