Laser Safety Glasses vs Ordinary Safety Glasses

Standard safety glasses are designed primarily to protect the eyes from hazards such as flying particles, dust and mechanical impact. Laser safety glasses have a different purpose: they are designed to attenuate specified laser wavelengths.

The key difference is the filter. Laser safety eyewear contains a wavelength-specific filter that reduces transmission of laser radiation. Ordinary safety glasses may offer useful physical protection but should not be assumed to provide meaningful protection against a laser beam.

Laser wavelengths can range from ultraviolet through visible and infrared radiation. Because different filters are designed for different wavelengths, laser eyewear must be selected according to the actual laser system.

Optical Density is one of the principal specifications used to describe laser attenuation. The OD rating should always be considered together with the wavelength range for which it applies.

Frame coverage can also differ. Laser eyewear may use wraparound designs, fit-over frames or additional side coverage depending on the intended application.

It is important not to judge laser protection by lens darkness. A dark-looking lens is not automatically suitable for laser protection, while a lighter filter may provide substantial attenuation at a particular wavelength.

Standard safety glasses can still be valuable as part of workplace eye protection, but they serve a different purpose.

Where laser hazards are present, the appropriate approach is to use laser-specific protective eyewear that has been selected for the wavelength and exposure conditions involved.
