Laser Safety Glasses vs Regular Safety Glasses

Standard safety glasses are designed to protect the eyes from physical hazards such as flying debris, dust, or chemical splashes. Laser safety glasses, however, are specifically engineered to reduce exposure to laser radiation.

While regular safety glasses may protect against impact hazards, they generally do not contain the specialised optical filters required to attenuate laser wavelengths.

Laser safety lenses are manufactured with filters designed to block or absorb defined wavelength ranges. These filters are tested to verify their optical density performance.

Another difference is the information printed on the eyewear. Laser safety glasses include markings that identify wavelength protection ranges and optical density ratings, allowing users to confirm compatibility with the laser system.

Because of these differences, standard safety glasses should not be used as a substitute for laser safety eyewear when lasers are present.
