Optical Density, commonly abbreviated as OD, is one of the most important specifications listed on laser safety glasses. It describes how effectively the lens reduces laser radiation at a particular wavelength.
Higher OD values indicate greater attenuation of laser energy. For example, eyewear with OD 7 provides significantly more attenuation than eyewear with OD 3, although the appropriate rating depends entirely on the laser system being used.
Optical Density is always associated with a wavelength or wavelength range. A pair of glasses may provide OD 7 at 1064nm but offer much lower protection at another wavelength.
This is why users should never select laser safety glasses based solely on the highest OD number. Instead, they should confirm that both the wavelength and OD match the laser equipment being operated.
