What Optical Density (OD) Means in Laser Safety Glasses

What does OD 7+ actually mean?
OD stands for Optical Density and it measures how much laser light the glasses block. For example, OD 7+ means the glasses reduce the laser’s intensity by a factor of 10 million. The higher the OD, the greater the protection.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Always match the OD level to the specific wavelength of your laser.

  • Using glasses with too low an OD can put your eyes at serious risk.

  • Using overly high OD for low-power lasers may unnecessarily reduce visibility.

The OD value is usually marked directly on the glasses, along with the wavelength range. If you need help determining the right protection level, our team can help match the right model to your laser.
