Why Laser Wavelength Matters for Eye Protection

Every laser produces light at a specific wavelength, and each wavelength interacts differently with optical filters. This is why laser safety glasses are never considered universal.

For example, eyewear designed for a 1064nm fiber laser may not protect against a 445nm blue laser or a 532nm green laser. Similarly, protection for a CO₂ laser operating at 10,600nm requires completely different filter technology.

Laser safety glasses are engineered to attenuate defined wavelength ranges, with optical density varying across those ranges.

Selecting eyewear based on wavelength compatibility is essential for effective protection and is one of the first steps in any laser safety program.
